Cervix is the organ below the uterus, also called as mouth of uterus by some. Cancer of the cervix is one of the leading causes of death in Asian women, especially in India. Pap smear is a test to screen this cancer at early stages, thus is a life – saving measure. Pap test can also tell if you have an infection or unhealthy cells. The test cannot be done while the woman is menstruating.
Vaccinations
This period is easier for the patient than the first trimester. I shall be monitoring your weight gain, changes in your body due to the pregnancy and your baby’s development. Pregnancy related diseases are manifested in this period, hence this phase is of vital importance. I shall be prescribing medicines to fulfil your nutritional requirements. You will have to undergo anomaly screening sonography to ensure safety of your baby’s growth.
Third Trimester
Did you know that there are important vaccines you can receive during a visit to your Ob/Gyn? In pregnancy, the flu vaccine and tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine are recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) as well as the Centers for Disease Control. These are potentially life-saving vaccines for mothers as well as newborn babies. The quadrivalent human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, also known as Gardasil, is given between the ages of 9 to 26 years to protect women against the four most common strains of HPV, two of which cause 90% of genital warts and two which cause 70% of cervical cancers. These vaccines exemplify the goals of Ob/Gyn's to protect women and babies against preventable diseases during and after pregnancy, and across a woman's lifetime.
